Personalization is the way of cell phones, iPods, laptops and just about any other electronic device available, so why not cars?

Daimler’s UK smart microcar division obviously asked this question, resulting in an entire line of body “skins” for its fortwo city car.

Six different adhesive foil stickers are designed exclusively for the smart fortwo by Germany’s acclaimed artist Timo Wuerz, and are to be applied to the car’s Tridion safety cell, the only body part on the car that previously couldn’t be personalized after purchase.

The Tridion safety cell is the backbone of the smart fortwo, and the reason the tiny commuter car scores so highly in safety tests.  Now, the normally silver passenger “cage” can be stylized with unique decals featuring flower, skyline, star designs and birds’ wings, as well as classic black, white and blue racing patterns. The stickers cost

£182 (about $280 CAD) and can be applied by a smart dealership service department in about an hour.  They are said to last up to 5 years, a long time considering the general wetness of the British Isles, and can be removed at any time without affecting the paint finish of the safety cell.

"smart owners love to personalize their cars and these accessories mean that they can make their smart ownership experience even more unique,” commented Managing Director Mercedes-Benz Cars UK, Dermot Kelly.

Inside, fortwo owners can have an eight-piece carbon fibre-look kit applied, a faux add-on

that covers the dash, instrument cluster, steering column stalk, door handles and centre console.  It even includes a Brabus logo; Brabus is a Mercedes-Benz performance tuner that also tunes smart cars. The interior upgrade package costs £256 (about $390 CAD).

Brabus also offers a functional LED daytime running light package.  Available in either chrome or black and priced at £486 ($745 CAD), the LED lights improve nighttime visibility and add style.  An LED brake light can be added too, for £178 (about $275 CAD), replacing the centre mounted brake light integrated into the rear spoiler.

"Like the smart,

these new stickers and BRABUS accessories are innovative in their design and made to a very high standard,” added Kelly.  “What's more, all are completely reversible too, meaning that owners can easily change their car back to standard specification should their tastes change or if they are upgrading to another smart and wish to sell their existing model."

smart’s US division might want to consider something similar to the UK personalization program, however the creative approach won’t likely rejuvenate fortwo sales that were down 61-percent this March from the same month last year (only a substantial increase in the price of fuel will do that).  Still, such an approach would go far to enhance the smart ownership experience in the US and Canada, helping to maintain customer loyalty.
