What's today's best value for a seven-seat crossover? Determining value isn't exactly cut and dry, as the equation would

have to include a comparative list of standard features, performance and fuel economy numbers, and ultimately the price of purchase compared to its trade-in value after the duration of a given term, but leading off with the lowest price is certainly a good position for the Dodge Journey to start.

All you'll need is $21,170, plus a $1,395 destination and pre-delivery inspection charge, less whatever discount you can achieve (pretty good right about now I suspect), and you've got a very roomy, extremely competent seven-occupant crossover. The five-person Journey can be had for a measly $19,995, incidentally, and yes that's a midsize SUV for less than most compacts. Also keep in mind that this price is almost identical to what it sells for in the US (except that Canadian pricing doesn't include freight and pre-delivery inspection), and that when it debuted our dollars were almost at parity, whereas now, despite no change in pricing, the loonie has lost about 20-percent to the greenback. Most automakers have upped their pricing to compensate, but not Dodge.

think it would be a fairly spartan vehicle for this price, but all Journeys come with power windows, door locks and mirrors, air conditioning and a significant assortment of safety features such as ABS-enhanced four-wheel discs, traction and stability control plus side curtain airbags for all window passengers. The mid-priced SXT tester Dodge outfitted me with, which is incidentally the most popular model offered, was nicely finished inside with the same requisite soft-touch plastics on the dash, door and centre armrests that all Journeys get, some attractive textured metal embellishment around the audio and HVAC interface, and a two-tone black and gray colour scheme inside, the seats of which were made of premium cloth. What's more, the overall design is hardly common, in that Dodge chose a truly unique modulated-style dash design that I think works very well.

with USB connectivity for downloading songs, photos or what-have-you. It's an easy system to use and sound quality is good, better at least than most crossovers offered in the Journey's price range, and an auxiliary connection means you can listen to your favourite song lists or audio books directly from your external device. UConnect hands-free cell phone connectivity is also part of the package, important because in some areas you'll get a ticket for holding onto your cell phone while driving. A navigation system can be had for extra, but you get the cool touch-screen interface without it as part of the audio upgrade package, plus the screen turns into a very functional backup camera when the transmission is shifted into reverse. My SXT didn't include automatic climate control, although its DIY HVAC interface worked extremely well despite deplorable weather. Heated seats, even without leather trim, would have been appreciated, mind you.

My tester included three rows of seats, however, and while I wouldn't want to spend a long trip back there I had no problem fitting in when the second row seat was moved forward a tad, with room for my toes underneath the seats in front, while accessing the rear was also easy via middle-row seats that tumble well out of the way. There's a reasonable amount of space behind the third row for a couple of suitcases, a duffle bag or whatever else you might want to bring along that's not too big, while the two rear rows of seats fold flat for cargo too, of course. What's more unique are the numerous storage areas Dodge has hidden around the cabin. Under the front passenger's seat, for instance, is a convenient bin that uses the seat cushion as a lid. There are two additional lidded storage bins in the floor, each capable of stowing twenty-four cans of beverage, as well as two in the ChillZone glovebox if so equipped. Altogether, Dodge has integrated eighteen separate storage areas into the Journey, so maybe it's best to create some sort of legend or organizational

list so that you don't misplace anything important – I'm sure an iPhone app can be had for it or will be shortly (said with tongue fully in cheek… although it would make a great marketing gimmick, Dodge). If you're the type of person who likes to hope for the best but prepare for the worst, the number of enclosed, out-of-the-way spaces for emergency supplies will have you jumping for joy.

Being a parent of two small children, the smallest five years old and the middle child having just turned eight, I can appreciate the hassle that child safety seats and boosters are. When the kids aren't aboard, the latter of these two is always clunking around in the back seat, or otherwise taking up space. The Journey's integrated child seat option is a great solution, and like everything else about this crossover it's easy to use. Just tug on the release lever and the cushion insert pops up and locks into place, providing an elevated perch for your little one and more importantly stowing out of sight when not needed. For some folks, that one feature will be a dealmaker. And you can keep an

eye on your kids with a handy convex mirror that flips down from the overhead console, while maintain a clear view of the road ahead.

That road was covered in white fluffy snow for the first part of our test week, and then wet heavy clumps of brown and white mush after the rains poured down, a real mess although no problem for the Journey, even in front-wheel drive guise. Yes, I would have liked the optional AWD configured Journey as I probably would have ventured down some less ideal roads that I made sure to bypass this time around, but even axle deep in some truly ugly rutted side roads the crossover held its own pretty well.

One of the Journey's best attributes has to be its compliant ride. It's plain and simply a comfortable car to drive or be driven in, so I could see myself opting for one when summer vacation comes and a camping trip to hinterland beckons. Just the same, it handles curves with respectable decorum, leaning a bit in really tight higher-speed turns but overall quite capable. Just for interest's

sake, the Journey is based off of the Avenger midsize sedan which itself rides on compact Caliber architecture, both of which are reasonably fun in the corners. The Journey is substantially modified from either vehicle, however, which is why I think it's even a better ride/handling combination than the Avenger.

My SXT model came with Chrysler's 3.5-litre V6 that, making 235-horsepower and 232 lb-ft of torque in this application, proved to be more than up to task when accelerating up freeway on ramps or passing slower moving vehicles. It's a fairly smooth lump and quite quiet, although it makes itself heard in the higher rev range like most engines in this class. An AutoStick manual-mode enhanced six-speed automatic makes sure all of that power is put to best use via shorter intervals that maximize the engine's sweet spot, while taller final gears improve fuel economy on the highway. If fuel economy, or the entry-level price point, matters more to you than performance, Dodge supplies the Journey with a 2.4-litre four in lower trim levels, and having tested it previously in the Caliber I can attest to its willing performance and generally thrifty nature. Granted, a base Journey is substantially heavier 1,724 kilos (3,801 lbs) than even a loaded Caliber.

Not as plentiful as Calibers, I've nevertheless been seeing a lot of Journeys on the road lately, so obviously its value proposition has hit home with more people than just me. Then again, it's not all about money, as the Journey looks quite nice in a somewhat conservative fashion, with rounder corners than the norm for this brand as of late, and truly stylish tail lamps that give the car's rear end some individuality. From the front, well, there's only one brand with the bold crosshair grille, a look initiated by its line of Ram pickup trucks, but now spread across the entire lineup.

I have to say that I'm very impressed with the Journey. It doesn't meet all of the criteria on my want list, but it certainly satisfies my needs, and in today's belt tightening world cars like this will enjoy greater success than ones like the crossover it replaces, Chrysler's luxuriously equipped and therefore comparatively pricy, yet less family-friendly Pacifica. The Journey's slightly smaller dimensions and fuel friendly powertrain lineup won't hurt sales either, so I suppose we should expect to see more of these around as word gets out.

The barrage of family friendly vehicles never seems to come to an end. It's

as if with every new day there's a newer, better, more practical way of getting your family from A-to-B. Many of the headliners, like the Toyota Highlander, Ford Edge, Buick Enclave and Mazda CX-9 are excellent all-round vehicles. Fast, smooth, comfortable and spacious, they're what the modern automobile has become. And there's no denying that this sort of vehicle is grabbing the limelight. While automakers are striving to be the best, perhaps they've unconsciously lost sight of the real world. Not everyone can afford to buy (or want to buy) their suits from Harry Rosen and their watch from Royal de Versailles or Brinkhaus, so why should people have to put down $40,000 or more of their hard earned dollars for a crossover?

Buying a vehicle can be very tough for a family on a budget that legitimately needs something larger and more spacious than just the average midsize sedan, and the traditional method of finding cheap interior volume, i.e. minivans, are becoming more limited. Ford has completely dropped out of the minivan business, and GM's entrants will only be around until the end of the year, where upon the new Traverse

crossover based on the Acadia, Outlook and Enclave kicks into high gear. Even considering the mainstream minivans from Honda and Toyota, or value brands like Hyundai and Kia would mean spending over $30,000, and crossovers are no better... or at least there wasn't anything to look at until now. Finally there's a company that's out to tackle this problem head-on. It's Dodge, and they're doing it with the Journey, the first product launched by “The New Chrysler”.

$19,995. That's what the new Journey SE Canada Value Package costs, a figure that's going to drive some of its competitors up the wall trying to figure out how they can make a profit, and it'll make you wonder what's getting into the drinking water of Dodge's product planners. If you read my review on the whole Journey lineup yesterday, you already know that this is just $10 off the US price of their base Journey, though our pricing doesn't include freight and PDI, whereas theirs does. Still, that's the closest difference between US-Canadian pricing I've ever seen.

What $19,995 buys isn't just the shell of a vehicle either, but rather it's very well equipped. Its windows and door locks are power-operated, as are the mirrors (they're heated too), plus A/C and a six-speaker, six-disc CD audio system with auxiliary input are standard too. All the cubbies and storage bins are part of the base package as well, and so do a surprising assortment of safety features such as dual front, side-seat and side-curtain airbags, plus four-wheel discs with ABS and stability control. There are no two ways around it – that's a whole lot of content for very little money. Do you really mind that the mirrors are black plastic and the wheels are steel with plastic covers when you're only spending twenty grand?

Consider, for a second, what else is on the market that offers this kind of size and space, not to mention these features for under twenty grand. There isn't anything. Consider that the mini-minivan segment, consisting of the Kia Rondo and Mazda5 start with higher MSRPs than the Journey, yet neither have air conditioning as standard

(and the Mazda doesn't have auto). Believe it or not, the Journey is way cheaper than the Dodge Avenger that it's based on; the base Avenger SE is over $2,000 more to purchase than the Journey, and you can't even get ABS brakes until you step up to the SXT ($24K). Heck, you could even bring the value-for-money battle right down to the level of the Caliber. Equip one of these five-door hatchbacks to the same level as the Journey and it costs $750 more, and doesn't even have as much power, or anywhere close to the amount of space! It's really unbelievable the amount of stuff you get for your money with the new Journey. For $1,000 more you can step up to the SE Plus, which adds tinted glass, a roof rack, cruise control, and keyless entry with that really cool Mercedes-Benz style fob. An additional $1,175 buys the Flexible seating group that turns the Journey into a seven seater, complete with rear-seat vents and lighting.

There is only one powertrain choice with SE model Journeys, and that's the 2.4-litre VVT inline-four that makes 173 horsepower, sourced from the Avenger and Caliber, which is mated to a four-speed automatic that does not have a manual mode. It's a fairly advanced engine, with

variable valve timing on intake and exhaust valves, and it delivers comparable power to many equivalently sized engines. Because the Journey's physically smaller than most three-row crossovers (and two-row crossovers for that matter), the four makes logical sense, but small size doesn't always equate to low weight. In the case of the Journey, it has to lug around 1,724 kilos (3,801 lbs) when empty. It's not bad, per se, when just driving around in town, but if you were to load it up with five adults, or seven, you'd really be wishing for more power. 0-100 km/h arrives in the neighbourhood of 11 seconds, which is not fast, especially in a class that's dominated by high-powered big displacement V6s, and this of course is not helped by the long gearing to keep the car quiet at cruise and to improve fuel economy. And don't even bother towing, even if Dodge says it can haul 454 kg (1,000 lbs).

Where the R/T and SXT were quiet and energetic during moments of hard acceleration, such as passing, I can't say the same about the four. To get the gearbox to kick down requires you to really press hard on the throttle, and the engine sounds as if it's truly disgruntled with having to exert itself. The engine

noise is more evident because the rest of the car is shockingly quiet, and extremely well sound-proofed from wind and road noise. The upside to fitting the smaller engine is very good fuel economy at 11.0 l/100 km in the city and fewer than 8 l/100 km on the highway, which, by the way, is a full 7-percent better than what the old short wheelbase Caravan could achieve, and is more economical than just about any other seven-seat crossover (or minivan) on sale, meaning more money in your pocket.

Without the sports tuned suspension or the big wheels, the Journey doesn't feel as sporty, with a softer more comfortable ride. It's an easy car to drive, with a light but slightly glued feel, and the wheel is easy to twirl making parking easy. With good sight lines, giant side-view mirrors, a high yet still car-like seating position, and a smaller physical size, the Journey is a breeze to drive in the city, which should help to make it popular. Put it this way – it may not be the most interesting vehicle to drive, but it's a step above the minivan experience.

Being within the most basic level of family transportation, you'd expect the Journey to look pretty barren on the inside. Yeah, it lacks the two-toned interior scheme, and there are quite a few blank switches on the console, but it's not bad. Because the basic materials used on the Journey are consistent through the lineup, it's only the finer details like chrome accents that are missing. Fortunately Chrysler hasn't forgotten how to keep some interior sparkle in a basic vehicle. The Journey offers unique corrugated aluminum-look trim, and the six-way manually adjusted driver's seat is quite comfortable. Stadium seating and a low beltline give rear-seat riders a good view of the world around, and on five-seaters the cargo area has plenty of space, while the under-floor storage is hidden by a reversible floor a la Magnum; one side's plush and carpeted while the other is made from wipe-down plastic.

In the real world, people don't just buy cars with cash; they lease them or finance them. Considering the potential for low monthly rates, I have a feeling this is going to be a big hit. Dodge says

that initially the car will be offered on a 24 month lease with $0 down for $299 a month. What's more is that the unlike a number of previous Value Packages for Canada, a “base” Journey can be much more than just “base”. Across the board you can upgrade to a third row for $1,175, which, once again, includes second row climate controls and third row vents and lighting, and through the Safe and Sound package you can upgrade to the MyGig  infotainment system (sans navigation), which includes the 30 gb hard drive and touchscreen interface with USB connection, plus a reverse camera can be incorporated for just $695. It's the sort of technology you'd expect to find on $60,000 vehicle, but it won't add much more than $15/mo in the Journey, something that many people will easily see themselves upgrading to. Buyers can also get a factory-fitted rear-seat entertainment system on the base Journey, at a cost of $1,500. That's pretty exciting stuff for a family on a budget.

Just the same, the Dodge Journey wasn't designed to excite the senses or ignite a passion for driving; it was designed to be realistic, affordable transportation for budding families. With all the storage bins, the cupholders, and three rows of seating with available integrated booster seats, it's hard to see how Dodge could've designed a better car for the intended purpose. In the coming months and years, I guarantee you'll be seeing a lot of these vehicles on the road.

be the fastest growing segment in the auto industry and sure enough, it's turning out to be that way with staggering growth in market share year over year. In theory, this is the segment that is supposed to deliver it all. Buyers demand minivan-like practicality, SUV-like ride and styling, and the on-road manners of a car, and manufacturers are all too pleased to come up with their spin on the ideal vehicle.

But unlike a lot of manufacturers, Dodge doesn't have a crossover; they left that for the Chrysler brand to sort out with the Pacifica. Their family hauler lineup consists of more straight up traditional vehicles, like the Nitro SUV, the Durango full-size ute, the Magnum wagon and the Caravan minivan, all of which are practical solutions, but the brand doesn't have the one desired vehicle that blends everything into one. And, with the scheduled demise of the Pacifica, Dodge couldn't have timed the release of the Journey any better.

With the new Journey, Dodge isn't making any bold or provocative claims of shifting the segment or redefining what we know crossovers to be, but it's hinted from the start that it's going to be something different from what people traditionally expect from the brand. The Journey is a vehicle that Dodge is hoping will secure them a solid spot in Europe, and they've taken the development process seriously to match standards. During its development phase, Dodge benchmarked European vehicles, including the Ford S-Max, a multi-activity minivan that's captured the hearts of the European media.

Like the S-Max, the Journey is based off a smaller vehicle, or more precisely a stretched version of the Avenger platform, which means that it in turn is related to the Caliber. But it's not just a case of putting a vertical and horizontal stretch on the hard points of a small car.

In order to accommodate the ability to seat seven within a more compact dimensional form, Dodge shifted the engine and gearbox points forward while stretching the wheelbase to 2,890 mm (113.8 in), a process that involved pushing the wheels out to the corners.

Physically, it's a bit hard to determine what category the Journey fits into. It's bigger than a mini-minivan like the Rondo or the Mazda5, yet it's still a ways off the length of the Ford Edge or Nissan Murano, which are two-row, five passenger vehicles. Its profile is also unusual, resembling more of a tall station wagon than either a minivan or an SUV-like crossover – the closest vehicle in this regard is the Ford Taurus X (previously the Freestyle), although it's a whopping 30 cm (11.8 inches) longer overall. Dodge is offering the Journey as a two-row vehicle with plenty of cargo space, but if you need room for seven and have $1,175 burning a hole in your pocket, any Journey, from base to fully-loaded, can be equipped with a flat-folding third row which also includes such humanitarian provisions as extra overhead lighting, separate rear controls and air vents.

What's more is that the seating system you get in the Journey is actually pretty decent. The second row seats slide and tumble in a similar way to the GMC Acadia, with one easy to operate handle, and they also recline. The third row seats are a 50/50 split that are surprisingly comfortable to sit in, and come with two proper headrests. With stadium seating, there's still a reasonable view out the front, but also no shortage on headroom thanks to a hollowed out roofliner. Provided that occupants in front are kind enough to move their seating positions forward, a 5-foot, 10-inch adult can easily fit inside. Critically, unlike the Pacifica, there's also space for feet under the second row, and with the third row up, you can still fit in a hockey bag or a few backpacks.

Wrapped around the cabin is a look that's strangely conservative for a Dodge. Compared to the likes of the Avenger or the Caliber, the hard, sharp edges that create the “in your face” look have been

rounded off, and items like the headlamps and the grille fit in flushly. While still recognizable as a Dodge with the crosshair, chromed grille, it's a more sophisticated, classier look. Styling aside, the Journey features an aluminum hood and a composite plastic tailgate in an effort to reduce weight; the latter also allowed the fitment of an integrated tailgate spoiler, and due to its light weight, doesn't require a lot of force to shut.

There are two engine choices for the Journey, depending on the trim level selected. Base SE models are powered by the familiar 2.4-litre inline-four with variable valve timing, which comes mated to a four-speed automatic. Contrary to what was initially announced, Dodge has decided to opt out of offering the 2.7-litre flex-fuel V6 engine in North America, but don't worry, top-line models will be fitted with a 3.5-litre V6 that optimizes performance and fuel economy with a six-speed automatic transmission sporting AutoStick manual mode.

permanent all wheel drive, capable of sending 58-percent of power to the rear wheels, but only on when equipped with the larger V6. With little ground clearance and open differentials, and wheels shod with Kumho road tires, it has little by the way of SUV all-terrain credentials, which should be alright with those buying into this segment.

Climbing into the Journey, the thing that first struck me as different was the layout on the console and how odd it appears. I can't remember the last time I saw the stereo mounted below the HVAC controls, but with a bit of logical thinking it's not hard to see why this was done. I've always been told to drive with my hands at 3 and 9, but a lot of people drive with their hand resting on the shift knob, which, thanks to its angled positioning, is just a finger's length away from the stereo, something that's constantly being adjusted. Meanwhile, the climate control being placed higher on the centre stack works well too, given that it's in closer proximity to the wheel for easier adjustment (should you drive with hands

at nine and three). This unique approach is also matched by some unusual instruments, in an almost '60s retro square pod bins with chunky numbering.

Interior quality has always been a big deal on Chrysler products; they're often knocked for integrating hard, cheap-looking and cheap feeling plastics. The Journey is a step in the right direction in that its fit and finish is much improved over older products, with better tolerances, and a generally solid feel and appearance – look at the Journey versus products that Dodge was launching less than a year ago, and there's a day and night difference as to what's batter. Although soft-touch plastics are used on the instrument panel and some of the door inserts, the materials will not win Chrysler much critical acclaim. Fewer surfaces, around areas like the armrest and the door panels, have sharp edges or extruded flash, but that's still a few too many; and the flat, grainless and easily deflected plastic that houses the instrument cluster is hardly premium. But, like I said, compare it to the stuff of Chrysler's past and this is a step in the

right direction.

But, from a practicality and feature standpoint, the Journey is downright brilliant. This is a car that was designed by people who have children, and therefore they've come up with some effective solutions to real life problems. Although it doesn't have a sliding side door (two reasons why crossovers will never be as convenient as minivans), the Journey's second row of doors open 90 degrees, providing easy access to the back seat. The second row bench slides forwards and backwards with over 120 mm (47.2 inches), which is more than most SUVs, allowing mum or dad sitting up front to easily reach junior. When he or she grows out of their big, clunky baby seat, the Journey also can be had with integrated child booster seats, just as with those new Volvo wagons, and there's a flip-down convex mirror that provides a fish-eye view of who's hitting who in rows two and three. Should we expect anything less practical from the minivan company?

And don't get me started on the sheer number of storage spaces and cupholders that the Journey comes with; you could really lose (or, alternatively, organize) your entire life in there. In total there are eight different storage bins including three that were specially designed to transport beverages. Dodge says that its two in-floor lockers are good for 24 cans, plus two in the dashboard's ChillZone. Your family will never be thirsty on a road trip again, provided your Journey is stocked. But the one that's really worth mentioning is located under the front passenger's seat, and flips up to expose a storage locker big enough to stow a small-sized purse.

Journeys can also be loaded up with plenty of toys, and all the usual Chrysler group suspects can be had, like a remote starter, LED interior lighting and MyGig, and I quite like the fact that you can now have the MyGig system without navigation. The great 30 gig hard drive infotainment system gains an iPod interface and a backup camera, but you don't have to order it with nav so the price is right. If you do, then the centre stack gets re-arranged, sprouting a separate binnacle on the dash that puts the

nav screen right in the driver's line of sight rather than way down at the bottom.

On the rolling, twisting hills that lead to Lake Mead, Nevada, the Journey is actually impressive. It's here that all the talk of practicality and family friendliness gets pushed aside; yes, this is actuality a pretty pleasing vehicle to drive. The R/T's sportier tuned suspension on 19-inch wheels gave the crossover a solid stance on the road, but the comfortable ride made sure that there was still a measurable level of body roll. Still, by no means is this vehicle unstable during high speed cornering. I really wish that the Journey's seats offered better lateral support; such would've been a great asset on the fast sweeping bends that carved through the Martian-red rock-scape of the Nevada countryside. It's an awesome sight to take in at 4:3 aspect widescreen, created by the wide yet short-height windshield. Lined by the A-pillars which unfortunately create some large frontal blind spots, the view out is unobstructed by the instrument bin which is tucked down, and out of the sightlines.

rack that feels more direct than the regular SXT, and also fairly direct in comparison to the vehicles it competes with. I wouldn't call it a driver's crossover, but the combination of smoothness and cruising refinement make it a very pleasant vehicle to cross the country in. The seating position is actually quite car-like despite the tall vantage point the Journey provides, and it's got a standard tilt and telescoping steering column for finding that ideal driving position. Unfortunately the shifter is about five centimeters too far rearward to comfortably use the AutoStick manual mode.

Between the four and the six, I would really have to say that the six is the way to go, primarily because it'd be hard to haul around 4,000 lbs plus people and cargo with the weedy four. The 3.5-litre engine found in the SXT and R/T, when fitted to the Avenger, is what Dodge describes as competitive, but you need to work the engine hard for strong progress, especially if you're going to be hauling five plus luggage. I also found the gearbox kept hunting for the right ratio on uphill climbs, but, its shift patterns weren't noticeable, and neither was engine noise.

I must give compliments to Dodge for making the Journey so unbelievably quiet; wind noise, engine noise and road noise were absent. Only at speeds above 120 km/h is there a noticeable amount of wind noise, much of which is generated by the side view mirrors.

Realistic. That's probably the best word to describe Dodge's pricing. Base Journeys, which still include automatic air conditioning and power everything, plus the full count of safety features including stability control and curtain airbags start at just $19,995, which is almost the same as its US pricing – so much for that US-Canadian pricing discrepancy, although their pricing includes freight, where as ours don't. Add on the third row, and that makes the Journey the cheapest seven-seater vehicle currently on sale too, undercutting the Rondo and Mazda5, the latter of which only seats six. Adding a V6 brings the price

up to $25K, while getting AWD requires $27,595. But, considering that the entire price range from bottom of the barrel to R/T AWD is just $10,000, excluding options, really goes to show just how serious Dodge is about getting the Journey into the driveways of Canadian families. The fact that it's the first vehicle sold in Canada that almost matches the list price of its US counterpart should net Dodge some goodwill points too.

And while value and the extra-affordable lease and finance payments are going to be big reasons for selecting the Journey over its pricier competitors, there really isn't any reason why you shouldn't buy it on practicality, safety, comfort or family friendliness either. Dodge just may have come up with the ideal vehicle for our uncertain times, when middle-class families are tightening their belts and therefore looking to get the most vehicle for their dollar.

By now, you've no doubt heard the sad news. Chrysler's Pacifica is officially

on the chopping block, and it's only a matter of time before the crossover is permanently discontinued. The Pacifica was conceived during a time when Chrysler was bullish about its future thanks to fresh investment money from the Daimler side of its previous partnership, and by and large the crossover was ahead of its time. Sprinter, Crossfire and 300 aside, which all delved deeply into Daimler's parts bins, the Pacifica nevertheless made use of a number of Mercedes-Benz components, but that wasn't the only way in which it was more advanced than some of its rivals. Chrysler also happened to catch one of the biggest trends in the auto industry well before it was on anyone's radar. The Pacifica, in five or six passenger guise (they never made it available with seven seats) was two sliding doors short of being a minivan, too comfortable and stable through the corners to be an SUV and too tall to be a station wagon. In essence, it had the makings of the perfect family car, but it didn't catch on in the way that Chrysler hoped it would.

The Pacifica might not have been in every driveway of every suburban home (due in part to Chrysler's high initial asking price), but it was hardly a failure. However, as you know, when it comes to making cars, if at first you don't succeed, try again. This time, Chrysler's approach is much more in tune with what buyers want, and what buyers are willing to spend.

And just what do buyers want? They want features and toys to make their lives and those of their children easier. They also want something that's more like a car and less like a truck or a van, and finally, they want something that they'll easily be able to afford. Chrysler figured that its youthful Dodge brand was best suited for a vehicle like this, and given the Caravan's dominance in the minivan segment, a category that many families are migrating away from, it only makes sense to have a cool looking crossover across the showroom floor. Instead of giving it an overtly aggressive name, as most Dodge products have, it's been titled something a little more family friendly – Journey.

The Journey serves up typical Dodge traits in a new, practical package. Its front end features the brand's trademark crosshair grille and strong, rectangular headlamps, while the body is decorated with flared wheel arches and chromed details. Keeping with Dodge's sportier image, the top of the line R/T model can be had with 19-inch wheels. But look at the rest of the Journey and you'll find that it's, well, kind of ordinary.

One of the ways that the Journey has been kept affordable is that it is yet another variation of Chrysler group's front wheel drive architecture, which it co-developed with Mitsubishi. The Journey is most closely related to the

Dodge Avenger and Chrysler Sebring, but rides on a wheelbase that is 124 mm (4.9 in) longer than that of the two sedans. It is also related to the Dodge Caliber and Jeep Patriot and Compass twins. The Journey will be available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, the same permanent system offered in the Avenger and Sebring, giving buyers that extra bit of traction and the additional feeling of security.

The interior styling is a little livelier than the exterior, and features a prominent new centre console that unusually places the stereo controls below the HVAC controls. From a traditional context, whoever was responsible for this would've had the book thrown at them, as this sort of thing just isn't done. But truth be told, it makes sense. When you're out driving along, most drivers tend to rest their hands on the shift knob, which in this case is right next to the stereo, one of the items often accessed while driving. On the flip side of the coin, this layout also benefits those who drive with both hands on the wheel; the redundant behind the steering wheel controls

provide fingertip access, while the raised height of the HVAC controls makes them easier to adjust while driving. A win-win situation, it seems.

Another win-win is the Journey's interior quality, with the new crossover taking over where the Pacifica, which benefits from Chrysler group's best interior, left off. The Dodge product doesn't offer the same luxury car appearance as the Chrysler, but according to our exec editor Trevor Hofmann, who took the time to poke around inside one on display at the IAA in Frankfurt last September, the plastics and other materials are all much better than any other Dodge car, truck or minivan, pointing the Journey in the right direction to compete with both domestic and imported crossovers.

Like the innovative dash design, you've got to commend Chrysler's engineers for thinking outside of the box when creating some of the Journey's seating and storage systems. The man behind the Caravan's Stow 'n Go seating system ought to win the Nobel Prize, as the flat-folding floor system has changed the minivan industry and kept Chrysler's vans leaders in their segment despite having only been warmed over during most of the past decade before their recent overhaul. While the Journey doesn't feature anything quite like the Grand Caravan, it does have a few tricks up its sleeve. For starters, the front passenger's lower seat cushion flips up revealing a storage compartment for something like a purse or an iPod, or even a laptop computer. Behind those seats, the Journey also features two in-floor bins, just like the ones in the Grand Caravan, but they weren't designed to hold seats, but rather chilled beverages. The lined, waterproof bins are big enough to store a 12-pack of soda with ice, so those with growing families needing to move up from their Calibers won't have to go without their ChillZone.

The Journey will be offered in two different forms, a standard five-seater or, thanks to an available third row with 50/50 split seatbacks, a seven seater; those rear seats are for children or occasional adult use only. Access to the final row of seats is done through a clever seating mechanism called Tip 'n Slide, which appears to be similar in operation to what GM features on their Lambda-platform crossovers. As

for the cargo bay, it features a tri-level load floor, and when the third row of seats is upright a cargo well is created for extra space, much like the Dodge Grand Caravan.

When it comes to buying a Pacifica versus the Journey, new owners aren't going to miss out on many premium amenities, other than HID headlamps and the more upscale look inherent to any Chrysler product inside and out. Family is this vehicle's priorities, and therefore it incorporates built-in child booster seats for the second row, a flip down convex conversation mirror, and something called a “child presentation feature” for first-row access to children in the second row, which reportedly helps make taking care of little ones all that much easier. Other features that the Journey is available with include the MyGig infotainment system and music hard drive, a back-up camera, a rear-seat entertainment system, 115-volt household outlet, and stain and odour-resistant YES Essentials cloth seats (leather is an option). Caliber, the ChillZone drink cooler isn't just incorporated into the rear seat, but rather comes standard up front too, as do illuminated cupholders and a removable, rechargeable LED flashlight.

The Journey will be available with three different engines in North America, a 173-hp 2.4-litre I-4 “World Engine”, a 2.7-litre Flex-Fuel V6 that makes 186 horsepower, and a 235-hp 3.5-litre V6. All engines come with automatic transmissions as standard, with the latter V6 featuring six forward speeds. We, however, miss out on what is arguably the most exciting technical feature of the Journey, only offered in Europe. This, of course, is its diesel engine option as well as Chrysler's new twin-clutch transmission, which will see its first application. Considering the success Chrysler's Jeep division has had with its Liberty diesel and newer Grand Cherokee diesel, it seems odd not to offer the fuel miserly option here in North America. The company no doubt has its reasons, especially considering it would be looking at all opportunities to make the Journey a success.

Sales success in mind, it will be a little while before the Dodge Journey is introduced to dealerships in North America as there are still stockpiles of Pacificas on dealer lots. The first models won't be around until this coming September 2008, so if your minivan or family-hauler's lease is going to expire next year, the Journey might be a good solution. After all, who knows families better than the brand that invented the magic wagon?
